Calling Experian is unproductive unless you're willing to provide your Social Security number, which makes it impossible to get a true read on how helpful it might be to call this number. When I dialed this number, I was asked if I was calling about my own personal account or if I needed assistance with a business account.

Not being a business, I opted for the personal account, and hit the choke point that makes it impossible to progress any further. Once you go with the personal account option, the system requires that you enter your Social Security Number to confirm your identity. There's no way around it; you have to either enter your SSN or the system won't allow you to move forward. Given that I wasn't willing to enter my personal information for this type of call, I chose to end it here.

With this being the case, it's not possible to judge how effective it is to call this number and speak to a representative. But for this type of phone number, that's a good thing. Given what Experian does and how it constantly handles sensitive information, it's vital to make sure that a person calling is who they say they are. Having someone call and get through without giving any personal information would either waste time or put information at risk, neither of which can be permitted with information of this nature.

A check of this phone number's background reveals that it's meant for technical support for both personal accounts and businesses. In either case, a typical customer would likely have no trouble providing their own SSN or tax identification number, allowing them to get past the choke point and receive services. Additionally, this number can only be called between the hours of 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., Central time.

Overall, I was impressed at how seriously Experian takes its customer security, even for the technical support department. There's almost no risk of information falling into the wrong hands because the system won't let you get past two menus without entering sensitive personal information in the form of your SSN or tax identification number.

Because of that, customer service reps aren't wasting time with callers who don't need specific help. That can go a long way toward limiting wait time, and with a number like this, the people who are calling likely don't have much time to waste. This kind of setup ensures anyone who needs it can get help quickly and won't have to spend more time than necessary in a stressful situation.

I wouldn't recommend using this number unless you're ready to provide your SSN, as it won't be of any help without that.
